Which Chatterbox Is Right For Me?

August 19, 2010 – 9:49 pm

We are in the process of adding Chatterbox motorcycle communication units to our web page so we thought we would give you a rundown on them.

Chatterbox offers two types of communication units: Intercoms and Transmitters

Chatterbox Intercoms (XBi and XBi2)

These models communicate at shorter distances and are much smaller in size (Chatterbox’s most popular models). They call them intercoms because they communicate like an intercom or telephone conversation. You can speak at the same time and talk over each other if needed. The noise reducing microphone is always “on”.

The Chatterbox XBi is the rider to passenger ONLY unit with a range of 10 feet. The Chatterbox XBi2 is the bike to bike version with a range of a 1/4 mile. The XBi2 can communicate among 3 total units at the same time. Lastly, these models are both equipped with Bluetooth. This means that you can answer your cell phone and listen to music via Bluetooth without any wires. Each kit is available in either a full or open face version depending on the riders helmet style. One kit is needed for each rider and comes with everything needed.

Chatterbox Transmitters (FRS, X2, X1 Bluetooth)

These models can be used for bike to bike and/or rider to passenger communication. Both rider and passenger would share the same unit and would be connected by a coiled extension cord. These models are UHF type radios that work just like your standard hand held radios. The main difference is that most are outfitted with noise reduction headsets and are designed for motorcycle use. They ALL use either voice activation or Push To Talk to communicate. Everyone must take turns talking just like a hand held radio. Each kit again is available in either a full or open face kit. Each kit includes everything for one person on one bike. If you would like to communicate to a passenger you must purchase the correct extension cord and additional headset separately.

Lastly, these units are different then the Chatterbox XBi2 in that they are UHF style radios. This means you can have as many people on the same channel talking as you like but everyone must take turns talking. The Chatterbox XBi2 can only have 3 total people talking. This is why the Chatterbox transmitter models are usually used by riders who want to communicate in groups of 4 or more.

Chatterbox FRS – 2 channels to choose from. Stereo sound, wired mp3/iPod music available. 2 mile range

Chatterbox X2 – 14 channels with 38 sub channels to choose from. Noise reducing stereo sound, wired mp3/iPod music available. 2 mile range

Chatterbox X1 Bluetooth – 22 channels with 38 sub channels to choose from: Noise reducing Hi-Fi sound, Wireless Bluetooth cell phone and/or music (mp3/iPod) available. 2 mile range

Conclusion

Granted this has been a brief explanation but hopefully it has helped remove some of the mystery over which Chatterbox communication unit fits your needs.
