Biker Beware – New Asphalt

November 25, 2009 – 3:54 pm

What can be worse than old, worn out asphalt? Well, new asphalt!

Around our retail, like many other streets across America, our streets are being resurfaced. Old asphalt may have loose gravel and pot holes but as a rider, you expect and look out for those conditions. With new asphalt, you expect smooth, easy riding but what you don’t expect is the hidden danger new asphalt presents.

New asphalt can be very slippery! The oil from new asphalt can cause a car to slide or skid easier. However, a motorcycle on new asphalt can easily fishtail during braking and in too many cases the front or rear wheel will completely break loose and throw the rider. So how do you avoid an unscheduled flight? When at all possible, brake slowly/evenly and brake in a straight line. This will give the bike a chance to brake without fishtailing. However, once the front or rear wheel breaks free, there is very little you can do about it. Stay calm (good luck) and use your controls smoothly (without jerking).

In short, be prepared, stay alert and ride safe!
