Helpful, timely advice and reviews for and by female (and male) motorcyclists

Wireless Intercoms

July 9, 2009 – 12:07 am

One of the popular accessories for motorcyclists these days are wireless intercoms.  Wireless intercoms allow you to communicate between rider and passenger without having to be tied down with all the cables.  The newer ones even allow you to communicate from bike to bike.  One of the more popular series of wireless headsets are the Cardo Systems Scala Rider products.

Who is Cardo Systems?

Cardo Systems has been designing and manufacturing Bluetooth headsets for years and are a world leader in wireless Bluetooth communications.  Their award-winning products integrate state of the art technology and features, with the latest innovative audio design.  They are a world leader in wireless headsets for motorcyclists.

Scala Rider FM

The Scala Rider FM is a lightweight, rechargeable headset that attaches to your helmet between the outer shell and the liner (the only tool needed is the included hex wrench).  Stereo speakers are routed under the helmet’s liner and a boom microphone is placed in front of your mouth.  This headset is designed to allow a motorcyclist to communicate with Bluetooth devices such as cellphones and GPS units.

With a properly equipped Bluetooth compatible GPS unit, you can hear turn by turn instructions or listen to XM radio through the Scala Rider FM headset.  With a properly equipped Bluetooth cellphone, the headset allows you to receive incoming phone calls and place calls using voice dialing.  The microphone is even designed to minimize road noise and the speakers automatically adjust to compensate for ambient noise.

As an added feature, the Scala Rider FM comes with a built-in FM radio.  It even allows you to program 6 FM stations for easy access.

Scala Rider Teamset

The Scala Rider Teamset is a set of two Scala Rider headsets, one for the rider’s helmet and one for the passenger’s helmet.  The rider’s headset has many of the features of the Scala Rider FM (without the FM radio) such the ability to communicate with Bluetooth cellphones and GPS units.  The main difference is the rider’s headset is linked to the passenger’s headset allowing the two riders to communicate with each other over a voice activated intercom with a range of up to 30 feet.

Scala Rider Q2

The Scala Rider FM and the Scala Rider Teamset all have great features but each has it’s limitations.  Enter the Scala Rider Q2, it has all the features of the Scala Rider FM and the intercom function of the Scala Rider Teamset.  However, unlike the Scala Rider Teamset whose limited range makes it only good for rider – passenger communication, the Scala Rider Q2 uses the more powerful Bluetooth standard to extend the range to 1600 feet making it perfect for bike to bike communication.

Scala Rider Q2 Multiset

Since the main purpose of the Scala Rider Q2 is bike to bike communications, there is also a Scala Rider Q2 Multiset. It contains two fully functioning Scala Rider Q2 headsets that have already been paired together. The set contains two of everything except the manual but that is also available online.

Conclusion

No matter what your riding style, there is a Scala Rider for you.  If you ride alone or only occasionally with friends, the Scala Rider FM or Scala Rider Q2 are for you.  If you ride two up, the Scala Rider Teamset or the Scala Rider Q2 Multiset is what you need.  And finally, if you ride with other riders often, choose the Scala Rider Q2.

Also, be on the lookout for the latest in the Scala Rider family, the Scala Rider G4. To see how it compares to the Scala Rider G4, read “Scala Rider G4 vs Q2“.

Whichever Scala Rider headset you choose, you are assured of getting a great headset for the ride!

  2. We saw there was a new Scala Rider now. Could you tell me what the difference is and should we consider this new model over the older model?
